Duelling is formal magical combat between wizards, wands only and no contact, with each fighter backed by a second, as Ron explains when Malfoy challenges Harry to a midnight duel.
Ron assures Harry that only proper duels between real wizards ever kill anyone, and that two first years can manage little more than sparks. A school Duelling Club opens the next year under Gilderoy Lockhart, with Snape as his assistant, and their demonstration starts with a bow before Snape blasts Lockhart off the stage with the Disarming Charm, Expelliarmus.
