Draco arrives at Hogwarts in 1991 with his family's pride in blood purity already fixed, is sorted into Slytherin at once, and finds his rival in Harry Potter before either of them reaches the castle.
Born on 5 June 1980, Draco Malfoy is the only child of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, of an old and wealthy English pure-blood family, and he arrives at Hogwarts in 1991 already certain that blood status settles a person's worth. He has a pale, pointed face, cold grey eyes and white-blond hair, and a drawling manner he has plainly learned at home. The Sorting Hat puts him in Slytherin almost before it touches his head. He keeps company with Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle, who trail after him everywhere, and with Pansy Parkinson and other Slytherins of his year. His rivalry with Harry Potter starts the day the two of them meet, before either has set foot in the castle.
