Dobby is the house-elf who appears in Harry's bedroom, defying his unnamed masters to warn Harry away from Hogwarts, punishing himself for every word.
Dobby announces himself in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by sitting on Harry's bed at number four, Privet Drive, a house-elf with batlike ears, tennis-ball eyes, and a grubby pillowcase for clothing. He has come, at obvious risk to himself, to warn Harry not to return to Hogwarts, insisting terrible things are in motion there, though he cannot say what or name anyone involved. Dobby serves a wizarding family he refuses to identify, bound by the enslavement that governs house-elves, and every disloyal word he manages is followed by frantic self-punishment, ears wrung and head banged against the furniture, because an elf must punish his own disobedience even with no master watching. Devoted, desperate, and immune to being told no, Dobby makes protecting Harry Potter his personal mission, whether Harry consents or not.
