The act of a Dementor drawing the soul out of a person, imposed by the British Ministry of Magic as a sentence in extreme cases and reckoned a fate worse than death.
Lupin tells Harry that a Dementor pushes back its hood only for this, its last and worst weapon, fastening its jaws over the victim's mouth. What is left can go on living while heart and brain keep working, he says, but without memory or any sense of self, and with no hope of recovery. The Ministry gives the Dementors leave to do it to Sirius Black if they find him.
