Cuthbert Binns

Cuthbert Binns is the History of Magic master at Hogwarts and the only ghost on the teaching staff, taking Harry Potter's year for the subject in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. He taught to a great age, fell asleep in the staff room one night and died in his sleep, and he has gone on teaching ever since. His lessons are held in Classroom 4F on the first floor, and he keeps an office in the castle. Ancient and shrivelled, a little like an old tortoise when he purses his lips, he wears small thick glasses and drones through Goblin Rebellions and giant wars in a dry, reedy voice while his students doze. He does not trouble to learn their names, addressing them by names years out of date.
