The torture curse Crucio, an Unforgivable Curse taught about in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, inflicts unbearable pain and brings a life sentence in Azkaban when used on a human.
The Cruciatus Curse is the torture curse of the wizarding world, one of the three Unforgivable Curses. Cast with the incantation Crucio, it inflicts pain beyond anything physical injury can produce, without leaving a mark on the body. Under wizarding law it stands beside the Imperius Curse and the Killing Curse: use of it on a human being carries a life sentence in Azkaban. Unlike a duelling hex it exists for no purpose except suffering, which is why the law treats it less as a spell than as a crime with an incantation attached.
