Cauldrons are part of the kit on every new Hogwarts student's list, which calls for one of pewter in standard size two, for brewing potions in the dungeon classroom.
A sign over a stack of them in Diagon Alley offers every size, in copper, brass and silver as well, some that stir themselves and some that fold away, but Hagrid will not let Harry buy one of solid gold because the list asks for a plainer metal. In Harry's first Potions class Neville melts Seamus's cauldron into a twisted lump, and Snape blames him for adding porcupine quills before taking it off the fire.
