Broomstick

No spell has ever been devised that lets a witch or wizard simply fly, so the broomstick had to serve instead, and it was a good choice for a household that wanted its means of flight portable, cheap and easy to explain away to the neighbours. The earliest recorded one appears in a German illustrated manuscript of 962. Early models were uncomfortable to the point of misery. A buyer weighs speed, agility, height, stability, resilience and comfort against one another, and the wood matters as much as it does in a wand. Prices run from around 600 to 5,000 Galleons. A broom answers simple commands and will fly up into an outstretched hand when told.
