Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans are among the most popular sweets in the wizarding world, and they turn up early in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. They look much like Muggle jelly beans, except that the range covers every flavour anyone could think of, and there is no way to tell which is which short of eating one, though colour offers a guess. Ordinary flavours are in the mix, chocolate, peppermint and marmalade among them, next to spinach, liver and tripe, and then flavours that are not food at all: grass, farm dirt, vomit, earwax, paper and bogeys. Bertie Bott invented them by accident in the middle of the twentieth century while trying to make sweets that tasted of proper food, and when one came out tasting of dirty sock he saw the commercial promise at once.
