Argus Filch is the Hogwarts caretaker, a wheezing man whose scrawny cat Mrs Norris fetches him the moment any student steps out of line.
Argus Filch knows the hidden passageways of the castle better than nearly anyone and can pop up as suddenly as a ghost. On their first morning he catches Harry and Ron trying a forbidden door on the third floor, refuses to believe they are lost, and threatens them with the dungeons. The students all hate him, Hagrid calls him an old git, and many dream of giving his cat a good kick.
