Animagus is the word for a witch or wizard who can turn into an animal at will, and Professor McGonagall demonstrates for her class by becoming a tabby cat marked like spectacles around the eyes.
Long before the word comes up in class, a stern tabby with odd markings around its eyes watches Privet Drive all day from a garden wall, and when Dumbledore arrives that night it is suddenly a severe witch in square glasses the same shape. In the classroom her transformation draws no applause for once, which she notices.
