Twisted mentat

A twisted Mentat is one produced on Tleilax rather than by a legitimate school. The difference is not in computation, which is the same, but in everything the Tleilaxu consider nonessential to it: body structure, emotional nature, psychological make-up, all of them built to the customer's order. The legitimate schools select admirable people and train them, so the two are separate breeds, and since what the Tleilaxu produce is so often warped, twisted Mentats are regarded with repugnance more or less universally. That never affected demand, and Great Houses trusted them with their secrets regardless. Piter de Vries, in the employ of House Harkonnen under Baron Vladimir, is one of them.
