Thufir Hawat
Thufir Hawat was a Mentat and Master of Assassins for House Atreides during the time of Duke Leto the Just.
Thufir Hawat serves at Castle Caladan in the days before House Atreides takes possession of Arrakis, the desert planet newly granted to Duke Leto by the Padishah Emperor. He has instructed Paul, the Duke's son and heir, in the political significance of the new fief, and he has warned that the apparent victory of acquiring the planet conceals hidden dangers.
To Paul he is more than a tutor. He has been a mentor and something close to a father figure through the boy's upbringing on Caladan, alongside the Duke's other men, among them Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho.
Hawat leaves for Arrakis ahead of the rest of the household. On the day of his departure he finds Paul in the training room at the castle and passes on what he knows: the dangers waiting on the planet itself, and the strength of the Fremen resistance to Harkonnen rule there.
