Stilgar
Stilgar was the Naib of Sietch Tabr, a position he claimed by challenging and defeating his predecessor, and one of the most respected leaders among the Fremen of Arrakis.
Stilgar came unexpectedly to the ducal command post at the Arrakeen landing field, where Duke Leto Atreides received him with Paul, Thufir Hawat, Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho present. He demanded that Fremen customs be observed regarding the crysknife, and he spat on the conference table, a gesture that among his people acknowledges the scarcity of water and gives respect. Before he left he negotiated an arrangement for Duncan Idaho: incorporation into Fremen society while Idaho remained in Atreides service.
He was pragmatic and tradition-bound, a leader who held to Fremen customs and to water discipline. Although he valued those traditions, he showed flexibility in recognizing the worth of outsiders, among them Paul and Jessica.
