The term Sietch was the Fremen term for a community or village.

The sietch Duncan Idaho visited has Stilgar as its chief. It is a cave complex, and Idaho, working from food processing and other evidence, puts its people at some ten thousand all told. Its leader counts two thousand hearths, and Thufir Hawat has reason to think the Fremen have a great many such communities.

Inside the sietch, Idaho was free to go anywhere, and he saw no shields there and no sign that anyone used them. While he was there, a smuggler caravan left with a heavy load of spice, using pack beasts for an eighteen-day journey. By Idaho's account, a crysknife made from a sandworm's tooth is the mark of the Fremen, and with one a blue-eyed man could get into any sietch in the land.
