A natural wall of rock on Arrakis that holds off the coriolis storms and keeps the sandworms clear of the settled north, Arrakeen included.
The Shield Wall is not man-made. It is a wall of rock, and what it does is stand between the settled north of Arrakis and two things that would otherwise arrive there: the full force of the coriolis storms, and the sandworms. Most of what matters on the planet sits behind it. Arrakeen is there, and so is Carthag, which served as the capital through the eighty years of the Harkonnen fief, along with the Cave of Birds, Mount Idaho, the Imperial Basin, the Minor Erg and Tsimpo.
