Pardot Kynes

Pardot Kynes looked at Arrakis and saw an expression of its sun's energy, raw material waiting to be put to another use, and as the first Imperial Planetologist sent to study the planet he was placed to do something about it. He stayed. Behind the Shield Wall one afternoon he came on six shielded and armed Harkonnen bravos beating three Fremen youths, understood that they meant to kill them, triggered his own shield and went in. Two days later the youths took him back to their village, owing him a mortal obligation. What he talked about there was water: grass, palmaries full of date palms, open qanats running across the desert. The Fremen who heard him decided to listen. He married a Fremen woman, and their only child was Liet-Kynes.
