Muad'Dib (Paul Atreides)

In the face Paul Atreides takes after his mother, the Lady Jessica, and in his coal-black hair after his father, the Duke of House Atreides. He is a disciplined, analytical boy. Muad'Dib is a Fremen word before it is anybody's name: it belongs to the small kangaroo mouse of the deep desert, a nimble creature that forages on the rock outcrops of Arrakis. Fremen custom gives a man two names, a secret one used inside the tribe and one he is known by openly, and Usul, the secret kind, means the strength of the base of the pillar.
