They called him Leto the Just on Caladan, and the Red Duke elsewhere, and both names were earned by the same habit of mind. Duke Leto Atreides I governed a green and comfortable world without letting it soften his household troops, since no Atreides could afford softness with the Harkonnens for enemies, and he weighed the moral cost of an order alongside the military one, which is why he would spend equipment to save spice workers and why he abolished customs he found degrading. That style made him a considerable figure in the Landsraad. He ruled Caladan for almost two decades with the Lady Jessica at his side, and their son is Paul. Then the Emperor ordered him to take the fief of Arrakis from House Harkonnen, a planet notoriously hard to hold and, as the only source of melange, impossible to refuse.
