The senior rank of the Spacing Guild: a human remade by lifelong immersion in spice gas, whose conditioned prescience steers ships through folded space.
A Guild Navigator, or Steersman, is the senior rank of the Spacing Guild and the summit of Guild ambition. A Navigator is a human being altered by melange in quantities nobody else would survive, taken orally and breathed as gas inside a microgravity habitat. The eyes go first, as with any spice addict, sclera and iris turning the blue-in-blue called the Eyes of Ibad. The rest follows over years: a Navigator lives in a rectangular antigravity tank of concentrated orange spice gas, and between the gas and the microgravity the body atrophies, mutates and elongates until what is in the tank is not shaped much like a man. What the Guild buys with that is a conditioned prescience reaching a little way across space and into the near future, enough to take a spacefolder through celestial hazards no instrument could plot a course around.
