Garun is the Naib of Tuono village, and his aide is Teishar. He receives guests with a hospitality that is closer to theatre than to custom: tight and constrained garments, equipment that is decorative rather than functional, deference that has been studied rather than come by naturally. What he actually has to offer is his own ground. He knows the country around Tuono and the history of who has come through it, and he keeps the rest of what he knows behind the performance.
