Clairby is a transport expert who works for the Bene Gesserit, a short man with a pinched-up face and skin the colour of newly turned damp earth. He is a driver and a pilot, and what makes him valuable is familiarity rather than rank: he knows his passenger's habits without being told and anticipates the stops she will want. He was hurt badly in an accident on one job and survived it only because cybernetic implants were fitted, which makes him a cyborg.
