Caladan
Caladan is the ocean world House Atreides holds as its ancestral fief, a place of rain, rivers, orchards and fishing fleets, and the birthplace of Duke Leto Atreides I and his son Paul.
Rain on Caladan is ordinary, which is the first thing anyone raised on Arrakis finds hard to credit. Rivers run down out of the mountains, the sea covers most of the planet and holds an ecosystem complicated enough that fishing became less an industry than a habit of mind, with trawlers standing off any stretch of coastline you care to look at. The land gives orchards, pundi rice and fine wines. House Atreides has ruled the planet for more than ten thousand years from Castle Caladan, holding it through dominance of the sea and the air and a standing army loyal to the House. Duke Leto Atreides I was born here, as was his son Paul, as were most of the Atreides who ruled before them. In 10191 AG the House was ordered to give the fief up for Arrakis.
