How it opens
Three runners flee northward through the Forbidden Forest on Arrakis by moonlight, with D-wolves close behind them. They are what is left of a team of eleven that crossed the Last Desert of the Sareer and went over the ramparts of the Citadel to steal its plans. The wolves bring down Ulot and then Kwuteg, while Siona, the fastest of them, carries the stolen charts and two volumes in cipher. Siona reaches the Idaho River, where the wolves are conditioned to stop, and swears to destroy Leto herself.
Who you meet early
- Siona AtreidesSiona is the only one of the eleven runners to reach the far side of the Idaho River, with the sealed packet of stolen Citadel charts and the two ciphered volumes she offered to carry. She hopes the charts hold a clue to where Leto hides his hoard of spice. She curses Leto under her full name, Siona Ibn Fuad al-Seyefa Atreides.
- KwutegKwuteg runs ahead of Ulot in the line, slowed by a right knee he injured coming down from the precipices around the Citadel. He carries an old name from the Dune times. When the D-wolves close in, he fights the pack and shouts for Siona to go.
- UlotUlot is the last and slowest runner of the team, and the D-wolves bring him down in the Forbidden Forest. He was included in the venture for his analytical ability. It was Ulot who judged the two strange volumes from the Citadel to be a cipher worth keeping.
