Arrakis, the desert world the Imperium calls Dune: killing heat, no water above ground, sandworms in the deep desert, and the only known source of the spice melange.

Nothing on Arrakis is generous. The surface of a dune can run a hundred degrees hotter than the sand a metre beneath it, and the water that exists is either locked deep under the mountain ranges or pulled out of the air as vapour by windtraps. The north pole sits on a plate of bedrock ringed by mountains, and that shelter is why the capital city of Arrakeen stands there rather than anywhere else. Past the settled ground the open sand belongs to the sandworms, which defend their territory against anything moving on it. Traders and offworlders crowd the towns of the graben, drawn by the money in water and in spice. The Fremen live apart from all of that, in sietches set inside the rock formations that break the desert.
