The Affiliation was formed by the Inner Baronies after the Kingdom of All-World came apart: a web of economic, political and military alliances with Gilead at the middle of it. It reached as far out as the Outer Baronies, Mejis among them, and sent them aid. What it was for, beyond trade and defence, was continuity. It kept the civilised traditions of Arthur Eld alive in baronies that were now independent, and held back the disorder that the fragile peace of Mid-World could not have survived.
