Taunton is a steel-making town southwest of Gilead, tied in lore to the forges of Arthur Eld's age and touched by the treason Roland witnesses as a boy in The Gunslinger.
Taunton belongs to Roland's boyhood in Gilead. It is a town southwest of the city, home to some four thousand people and known for its steel: lore holds that its smiths once forged swords and shields for the knights of Arthur Eld and in the age that followed turned to the making of guns for the Affiliation. It figures in one of Roland's formative memories, the affair of Hax, a palace cook caught in treason in the years when the Good Man's rebellion is beginning to gnaw at Gilead's world from within. The world has moved on; Taunton belongs to what it moved on from.
