Sombra first surfaces in The Waste Lands, the third book of The Dark Tower, as a corporate name in the New York of our own world. The Sombra Corporation is a company of that city, dealing above all in real estate, its insignia a cloud with a thunderbolt breaking out of it. The Dark Tower series moves between worlds: Roland Deschain pursues his quest for the Tower, the axis of all worlds, through the ruins of Mid-World, while portions of the closing books unfold in twentieth-century New York, where lots, deeds, and corporations hold places of their own in the story. Sombra belongs to that city side of the tale, a name that recurs across the closing volumes.
