The Sombra Corporation's name stands on a faded sign promising condominiums in the vacant lot at Second Avenue and Forty-sixth Street, and in 1976 it pays Calvin Tower a hundred thousand dollars for first right to buy that lot.
Eddie and Jake read its name on the agreement, which binds Tower not to sell the property to anyone else for a year and to keep up its taxes. Jake suspects the people behind Sombra know about the rose growing there, and pictures an office somewhere in Turtle Bay with a second door inside, the kind that opens onto other worlds.
