Shardik
Shardik is a seventy-foot bear of The Waste Lands, part beast and part Old Ones' machine, known to forest folk as Mir and tied to the legend of the twelve Guardians who stand at the ends of the Beams.
Shardik comes crashing into the deep forest near the Western Sea. It is a bear out of all scale with nature, seventy feet of ancient fury known to the old forest peoples as Mir, the world beneath the world, and it is more than animal: part flesh and part machine of the Old Ones, with a steel dish riding its skull. Mid-World legend tells of twelve Guardians set at the ends of the six Beams that uphold the Dark Tower, each an animal of power, the Bear among them. Shardik belongs to that legend and to the ruinous engineering of the vanished age, a creature in which feudal myth and futuristic wreckage meet in one body.
