North Central Positronics is a company from before the world moved on, its name stamped on old machines that keep working long after, from a water pump to a giant guardian bear.
At a desert way station Roland finds a pump, probably running on an atomic slug, that works and gives cool water in a land with no electricity for a thousand miles, and he does not like it. In the man in black's account, a company or cabal by this name led the way in science a hundred generations ahead of the day the world moved on. Eddie reads its full maker's plate, with Granite City and a serial number, on the bear Shardik.
