New Canaan is the barony at the heart of the Affiliation, with Gilead, home city of the gunslingers, as its seat.
The heart of the world Roland comes from in The Dark Tower series, New Canaan is named in Wizard and Glass, the fourth book, though its great city of Gilead shadows the story from the first pages of The Gunslinger. It is a barony of the Affiliation, the league that holds Mid-World's settled lands together, and Gilead, seat of the gunslingers, is its capital. From New Canaan the young gunslingers ride out on the Affiliation's errands, and from there Roland and his friends are sent east to Mejis as counters in the story of his youth. The world of the series has moved on; New Canaan endures in it as memory, the green land at the center of everything that fell.
