John Cullum is a blue-eyed Maine local from around East Stoneham, a total stranger who steps in to save Roland and Eddie during a gunfight and carries them off by boat.
John Cullum lives half a mile back from Keywadin Pond in the summer of 1977, doing caretaking, camp-checking and rough carpentry. His neat parlor marks him a bachelor, and his prize is a baseball signed by the Babe in his Red Sox days. He tells his guests that walk-ins, strangers who seem to come from other times or other Earths, have turned up around the local towns for two or three years.
