Henry Dean slouches through the New York of the 1980s. He is Eddie Dean's older brother, appointed Eddie's keeper by their mother after the loss of their sister Gloria, and he grows into the role of neighborhood big brother: a bully to smaller kids, a self-styled sage to Eddie, magnetic and needy in equal parts. Vietnam sends him home with a wrecked knee and an army-issue painkiller habit that opens the door to heroin. By this time, Henry is deep in the needle, and Eddie, who loves him past all sense, is carrying the weight of them both.
