Gabrielle Deschain is Roland's mother, a noblewoman of Gilead married at sixteen to Steven Deschain, remembered in the flashbacks that begin in The Gunslinger.
Gabrielle Deschain appears first in the Gilead memories as the mother Roland remembers. She is a noblewoman, born Gabrielle Verriss and sometimes styled Gabrielle of Arten, married at sixteen to Steven Deschain of the line of Eld, and the people of Gilead grow to love her. Roland's earliest memories keep her singing the Baby Bunting rhyme over him, the nursery song where he first hears the old word chassit. The world has moved on and Gilead with it; like most of Roland's people, Gabrielle lives chiefly as memory, part of the court and childhood the last gunslinger carries behind him.
