David is the hawk of Roland's boyhood in Gilead, a golden-eyed hunter named for the boy with the sling, whom Cort calls God's gunslinger after it slashes Roland's arm.
In the deep spring of Gilead, David rides Cuthbert's arm on the Back Courts while Cort springs a dove from a trap. The hawk takes the dove in spite of Cuthbert's slow release, and Roland runs to the kill, feeds the bird rabbit, and takes a long gash on his forearm before hooding it. Remembering the hawk in the desert, Roland judges it a creature of pure killing, much like himself.
