Clay Reynolds is one of the Big Coffin Hunters, a curly red-haired gunman in an ever-present cloak who has ridden with Eldred Jonas since age fifteen.
Clay is vain of his looks and fond of old gunslinger tricks, rolling a cigarette across his knuckles. In Hambry he works beside Jonas and Roy Depape, three hard men hired as private guards for the Mayor, Hart Thorin. He often cannot follow Jonas's talk and has learned not to ask, and he is the one who brings word that three young newcomers, sons of powerful fathers, have reached town.
