Can-toi
The can-toi, also called the low men, are figures first named in Wolves of the Calla: almost-human strangers in garish clothes and vintage cars, each forehead marked by a small red wound that never spills over.
The can-toi are also called low men. At a distance they pass for human. Closer up, nothing about them sits right: loud checkered suits and yellow coats worn like costumes, jewelry past taste, big American cars decades old yet showroom new, faces that look somehow finished rather than grown, and on each forehead a small red wound that wells without ever spilling over. They move through twentieth-century American settings on errands of their own, and the name, like much else about them, comes out of Mid-World speech.
