Big Kells
Big Kells is a woodsman of Tree Village in the tale told within The Wind Through the Keyhole, lifelong partner of Big Ross, who marries Ross's widow Nell and takes in her son Tim.
Born Bern Kells, the woodsman called Big Kells lives in Tree Village in the tale Roland tells. He grows up alongside Big Jack Ross, his lifelong friend and logging partner on the Ironwood Trail, and alongside Nell, the woman both of them court in their youth. When the tale opens, Ross is dead and Kells has married the widowed Nell, taking her and her son Tim into his keeping. He is a burly, brooding man with a history at the jug behind him, and the household he heads is a quieter, warier place than the one it replaces.
