The Beams are lines of force, and the one Roland follows runs from a portal toward the Tower.
Roland tells Eddie and Susannah what his teachers told him: the Great Old Ones did not make the world but remade it, and they created the Beams, lines that bind and hold. When Susannah asks about magnetism he agrees and adds gravity and the right ordering of space, size and dimension. Some tale-tellers say the Beams saved the world, others that they hold the seeds of its ruin, and Roland says they are breaking down.
