Zahel
Zahel is a gruff, unorthodox swordmaster in Words of Radiance, an ardent without piety who trains Alethi princes, Adolin Kholin among them, and talks in odd metaphors of color and flowers.
Zahel is a swordmaster. Nominally an ardent of the Vorin church, he shows no particular piety and little patience for anyone, wearing ragged, colorless clothes and a scraggly beard and speaking in a low, gruff rasp. He earns his keep training lighteyed officers and princes in the sword in the Alethi warcamps; Adolin Kholin counts among his students, and Zahel takes on new pupils reluctantly, with complaints, and then teaches them well. His talk runs to odd metaphors of color and flowers, his moods to weariness with his own age, and his manner to that of a man far from home who prefers not to say where home is. Among the ardentia, no one else is much like him.
