Zahel is a gruff swordmaster among the ardents of the Kholin practice grounds, an ex-soldier with ancient eyes and a ragged beard who has taught Adolin and takes on his brother Renarin.
Zahel stands apart from the other ardents, keeping a full head of hair and light clothes tied with rope. He starts Renarin's training by sending him to climb onto the dueling-ground roof and jump off, and grumbles that repeating himself makes him eat the wrong flower, a saying he explains means getting angry. Sparring Kaladin with a Shardblade, he likens the bodyguard's stubbornness to Adolin's.
