Yeddaw

Yeddaw is a city of the nation of Tashikk in western Roshar, the principal setting of Edgedancer, a novella of the Stormlight Archive. It is a city dug downward rather than built upward: its streets are deep trenches cut into the stone plain, made, the locals say, by hired Shardblades out of Azir a century ago, and its people live in the cuts, with doorways and windows bored into the trench walls and painted in bright columns of color. Farming happens on the surface between the slots, storm water drains along the trench floors, and a newcomer looking down from the rim sees a maze spiraling toward the center of town. The city's cooks are known for pancakes, ten kinds of them, sold hot in the streets, and its immigrant quarter crowds the poor and paperless into the narrower cuts.
