The Well of Ascension is the goal of the long journey told in an ancient logbook, whose writer climbs toward it through icy mountains, meaning to stop the Deepness there.
Sazed takes the logbook for the Lord Ruler's own record, set down before his rise, and Ministry teaching holds that he began as a mortal before the Ascension. The logbook implies that Terris prophets led its writer toward the Well, and he says he can feel it pulsing in his mind as he nears it. Vin asks Sazed what happened there and what power the writer meant to find, and he cannot tell her.
