The Hierocracy, also called the War of Loss, is reckoned the failure of Vorinism. The church tried to seize control in that period, and the priests set out to conquer the world for its own good, as they told it. The deeper problem was that the church clung to knowledge. Doctrine belonged to the priests, few members of the church were permitted to know theology at all, and men were taught to follow the priests rather than the Almighty or the Heralds. Where there should have been openness there were smoke and whispers, and the priests took to claiming visions and prophecies of the kind the Heralds themselves had denounced.
