Thirty or so men camped along the road toward the Shattered Plains, flying no banner and answering to no army. They do not march in formation and they do not share a uniform, but the equipment is good and the watch is tight, which is how a caravan guard reads them for what they are. Deserters are not bandits. A man who deserts has already handed over his oaths, his companions and his family, and having given all of that away he has very little left that he needs to be careful with.
