The Alloy of Law opens the Wax and Wayne sequence, set on Scadrial three hundred years after the original Mistborn trilogy, with the world on the verge of modernity: railroads supplementing the canals, electric lighting in the streets and in the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds. Allomancy and Feruchemy still matter, most of all out in the frontier lands called the Roughs, where they are crucial tools for the people trying to hold order and justice together. The book follows Waxillium Ladrian, a rare Twinborn who can Push on metals with his Allomancy and use Feruchemy to make himself lighter or heavier at will. After twenty years in the Roughs, family tragedy has forced Wax back to the metropolis of Elendel and the duties of a noble house.
