Taravangian is the elderly king of the city-state of Kharbranth in The Way of Kings, a builder of hospitals loved by the common folk and dismissed in foreign courts as kindly but slow.
Taravangian is the king of Kharbranth, a small free city-state on Roshar. An elderly man with a wispy white beard and a kindly, open face, he is adored by the common people as a builder: his city runs some of the finest hospitals in the world, where the sick and injured are treated without regard to nation or rank. Lighteyed politics judges him gently and dismissively; the consensus in foreign courts is that Kharbranth's king is warm, charitable, and not particularly bright, a harmless grandfather on a modest throne. Kharbranth itself wages no wars and holds little territory, and a mild ruler seems to suit it. Visitors find him gracious, attentive, and given to worrying over the suffering that passes through his hospitals.
