Sarene is a princess of Teod, seasoned in her father's diplomatic corps, who comes to the Arelish city of Kae to reforge her homeland's old ties with Arelon.
Sarene travels with Ashe, a glowing sphere about the size of a melon, who quotes a clause of her lengthy wedding contract word for word when she asks. Landing several days early to surprise Prince Raoden, a man she has never met, she is told he has died during her crossing, and a clause Ashe never liked binds her to him as fully as a wedding would. Before long she senses that something about the news of his death does not add up.
