Nomad is a weary traveller who Skips from planet to planet to stay ahead of the Night Brigade, carrying Auxiliary, a shapeshifting metal tool whose voice speaks in his head.
His last jump has left him nearly drained of Investiture, the power his abilities run on, too low to speak the local language. He comes to in a field where prisoners are being chained down for execution by a sunrise that turns them to ash, and he gets away by hooking himself to a departing hovercycle, which tows him to a ramshackle flying city.
