Kharbranth

Kharbranth is a free city-state on Roshar, one of the first settings of The Way of Kings. Called the City of Bells, it climbs a steep cleft above its harbor in tiers of blocky buildings, so sheltered by the terrain that its people joke a bell must be hung outside to know a highstorm has come. It holds almost no territory and wages no wars; its docks stand open to every flag, and it lives on trade, scholarship, and care. The Palanaeum, its great library, is counted the finest collection of books and records in the world, and the city's hospitals turn no one away. Kharbranth is ruled by the elderly King Taravangian, and it is here that Shallan Davar comes hunting a wardship with the scholar Jasnah Kholin.
