Diggen's Point

Diggen's Point is the island Tress lives on, though only the maps call it that. Everyone who lives there calls it the Rock. It is shaped, Tress thinks, like an old man's finger emerging from the ocean to point toward the horizon, and it is made entirely of barren black saltstone, crumbly stuff that gets into everything and eventually taints any soil brought in from elsewhere, so nothing will grow and all the food comes out of compost vats. The island is still large enough for a fair sized town and a duke's mansion. Its wells reach a deep aquifer, which is the reason visiting ships call there at all, and the equipment working the salt mines sends up a constant stream of black smoke. Nobody remembers who Diggen was, only that he named the place, left soon after, and never returned.
